UNILAG registrar lied for denying query – Document
Going by a document recently obtained by PUNCH Metro, the Registrar of the University of Lagos, Oladejo Azeez, may have lied when he denied receiving a query from the varsity Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.
The document showed that Azeez’s query, written on the UNILAG letterhead, was dated Friday, May 3, 2019.
Our correspondent had reported that some principal officers of UNILAG were allegedly served queries by Azeez.
The registrar was said to be acting on the instruction of the Chairman of the University of Lagos Governing Council, Dr Wale Babalakin.
The queries reportedly bordered on allegations of financial misappropriation and travelling without permission.
Those allegedly affected are the VC, Ogundipe; the two deputy vice- chancellors, Folasade Ogunsola and Oluwole Familoni; a former VC, Rahamon Bello; the school former Registrar, Taiwo Ipaye, among others.
The Chairman of ASUU, Dr Dele Ashiru, had issued a statement, saying Babalakin was running a one-man show in the university.
He also said the report Babalakin was allegedly acting on had yet to be received by the varsity council.
Azeez’s rejoinder to ASUU’s statement, titled, ‘The Need to Tell the Truth,’ was said to have angered the VC, who gave him a query for not conferring with him first.
When our correspondent called the registrar, he denied receiving the query.
He also said letters he sent to the officers were misconstrued as queries.
Our correspondent, however, obtained a copy of Azeez’s reported query from the VC.
The letter is titled, ‘Re – The Need to Tell the Truth – Request for Explanation.’
It read, “My attention has been drawn to the recent publication on Campus News, dated Friday, May 3, 2019, and titled, ‘The Need to Tell the Truth.’
“The contents of the said publication, purporting to respond on behalf of the registry, to a circular claimed to have been issued by Dr Dele Ashiru, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, UNILAG branch, is capable of causing tension in the university.
“As the registrar, it behoves you to be circumspect in the discharge of your duties, particularly as it relates to the sensitivity of development on the campus, the peace and tranquillity on the campus.
“It is also instructive to unequivocally state that the communication unit of the corporate affairs directorate is under the office of the vice-chancellor. It follows that all communication issued inside and outside the university must be expressly approved by the vice-chancellor before publication.
“In the light of the foregoing, you are expected to explain the reason for the publication, bearing in mind Section 3(1), 6(1) of the University of Lagos Act (1961), as amended, which states, inter alia,
‘There shall be a registrar, who shall be the chief administrative officer of the university and shall be responsible to the vice-chancellor for the day-to-day administrative work of the university….’
“You are also to forward the vice-chancellor’s approval granted for the publication under reference to the undersigned within 24 hours of the receipt of this memo.”
PUNCH Metro confronted Azeez with the document and asked for his response.
“No comment,” he said in a text message to our correspondent.
